Brazil Brings the Heat at Copa Sur: 5 Key Takeaways

by Energyzonefitness

The second In-Person Qualifying Event of the 2025 CrossFit season took place in Rio de Janeiro over the Easter weekend, adding four more individuals to the roster for this summer’s Games.

For those keeping track, 13% of the complete 2025 CrossFit Games roster is now set.

Here are a few takeaways from the event.

Two Rookies and Two Vets Are Headed to Albany

Kalyan Souza and María Quintero are returning to the Games, while Henrique Moreira and Luiza Marques will make their first appearances.

  • Moreira entered the final elimination-style event with an 85-point lead over Souza and needed nearly all of it to maintain his position after being knocked out early. In the end, he secured first place overall by just nine points.

Souza is making his third consecutive trip after qualifying as a rookie in 2023. He placed 32nd in his rookie year and improved to 23rd last year.

Quintero was the only woman in the field at the Copa Sur with individual Games experience, having qualified as the National Champion of Colombia in 2019. She was eliminated after the second event, finishing 60th out of 129 women.

Subsequently, she competed on a team at the Games for the last three years, placing 23rd, 32nd, and 25th.

Vitor Loffi Wawrzeniak One-Upped Roman Khrennikov

Two of the six workouts at Copa Sur were repeats from the Mayhem Classic.

“Heavy Isabel”

“Mayhem 1”

  • 30 cal Echo Bike
  • 30 bar muscle-ups
  • 30 cal Echo Bike

The “Heavy Isabel” times were substantially faster at Mayhem, as the best times in Brazil would have placed sixth in Cookeville for men and ninth for women.

The 30-30-30, however, was comparable. In fact, the fastest time of all 50 men from both competitions came from 19-year-old Vitor Loffi Wawrzeniak at Copa Sur. His time of 3:17 was one second faster than Roman Khrennikov’s.

Khrennikov is known for his power output on machines, and he dominated a stacked field at Mayhem, making Wawrzeniak’s time all the more impressive.

Agustin Richelme Has Competed at Both Qualifying Events in 2025

Richelme received the invitation to compete in Cookeville, TN, where he finished in 17th place.

To qualify for Copa Sur, one had to possess a South American passport and finish in the top 30 in the Open from that region. He finished in first place (35th worldwide).

  • The three-time Games athlete delivered a strong performance but fell short of securing a ticket to Albany, finishing in fourth place. He is currently the only athlete who has completed these workouts twice.

Here’s how his scores compare:

“Heavy Isabel”

  • Mayhem Classic – 6:46, 17th place out of 20 men.
  • Copa Sur – 7:09, 7th place out of 30 men.

“Mayhem 1”

  • Mayhem Classic – 4:14, 10th place.
  • Copa Sur – 3:47, third place, and heat win.

Missing in Action

The winners of the 2024 Copa Sur, Gui Malheiros and Victoria Campos, both chose not to compete in the 2025 CrossFit Season.

  • Instead of rumbling in Rio, they mixed it up in Miami in the HYROX mixed gender division. Without any specific training, their time was a respectable 1:09:17.

Both athletes competed at the 2025 Mayhem Classic, allowing us to gauge how their scores would have compared in Brazil.

“Heavy Isabel”

  • Malheiros’s time of 3:58 would’ve held up for the win in Brazil, 35 seconds faster than the winning time of 4:33.
  • Campos’s time of 7:02 placed her 15th out of 18 women in Cookeville but would have put her sixth out of 30 women in Rio.

“Mayhem 1”

  • Malheiros’s time of 3:43 was enough for third place out of 20 men at Mayhem and would have tied for second out of 30 men in Brazil.
  • Campos’s time of 6:56 ranked her 17th out of 18 in Cookeville and would have placed her 26th out of 30 in Brazil.

Eyes on the Prize

The views from the Sunday livestream in Portuguese topped 133,000, roughly the same as the Mayhem Classic.

There were also over 36,000 views on the Spanish livestream and over 10,000 in English, indicating that the appetite for live competitions remains strong.
